Links For 7-12-2008

This just in: smoking is bad. Movies with smoking in them are going to start having anti-smoking PSAs on the DVDs. Arnold Schwarzenegger is involved with this. The link demonstrates why this is incredibly hypocritical. I don't smoke, and think people not smoking or quitting is a good thing. What I object to is having yet another useless thing that comes on that can't be skipped past (I'd be willing to bet this falls in that category) before you can even get to the annoying menu just so you can watch some movie that's probably not very good anyway. (Plus, again, the hypocrisy of this whole thing is just irritating.)

Non-story of the day: DEADWOOD movies are dead. Well, it's no surprise, but now it's official.

In Mass. a new law has gone into effect requiring all children under 8 years old or shorter than 4' 9" use a booster seat when riding in a car. Is this really a necessary law?

Well, at least he drives a Prius ad campaign. Awesome ads that they'll never use. Why? Because there are a lot of people out there that are uptight, stupid, and devoid of any sense of humor whatsoever.

DRM Company Releases One-Sided Study On DVD Copying. Remember the other day when I linked to a story about 1/3 of people in the US ripping DVDs? Well of course the people against that sort of thing jumped all over that news. The thing is the people using this as an anti-piracy arguement are ignoring the fact that the majority of people in the survey that they spoke to said the DVDs they made copies of were ones they already legitimately owned. Of course, things like facts and the truth never get in the way of idiots.

FCC seeks to punish Comcast in Internet probe: report. For once the FCC is useful for something. Of course the next story about the same subject: Comcast ordered to stop BitTorrent traffic interference, does present a harsh reality...

It is to be expected that - if the pipes are really congested - Comcast and other ISPs will have to step away from the all-you-can-eat plans they have been offering for years, now that people are actually using bandwidth they signed up for.

Which of course means that Comcast and other ISPs will claim exactly that, and start charging us more and giving those low bandwidth caps they've been dying to roll out. So it's a phyric victory at best when you consider that the consumers will still get screwed in the end. (No pun intended. Even if it does work perfectly as one.)

SERIOUSLY, WHAT THE FUCK ARE METALLICA THINKING? (Gotta love that headline!) Greedy, dinosaur thinking from a band that hasn't done anything all that great in nearly two decades.

Geez, people really don’t like Elmo, huh? Blog of Hilarity shares some hilariously sick torture videos featuring those dumb Elmo kids toys.

Desk rage spoils workplace for many Americans. I worked in a place where everybody was like that 10 years ago. Everyday at work it was the, "I wonder if today is the day somebody comes in and starts shooting" day. Good times.

President George Bush: 'Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter'. Somebody wake me when it's 2009.

Prepare for another Hollywood strike!

SAG rejects Hollywood offer, strike imminent.

SAG-AMPTP: It's been a de facto lockout,

I guess they didn't learn anything from the billions lost last year.

'Men At Work' signs to disappear in Atlanta. I guess those sort of signs are considered, "subtle forms of discrimination". Dumb dumb dumb. First of all, this is a stupid thing for anybody to get worked up about, and it just seems more like a way to get somebody's name and face in the papers and on TV. Just change the signs to "construction ahead", which makes plenty of sense, and don't even bother mentioning doing it or making a big deal out of it. On top of that there's two things that spring to my mind. I can't recall, at least in my area, ever seeing any women working on those roadside construction crews. Ever. Maybe it's different in other regions. The other thing is, if you're that worried about what the signs say, how about making them read, "Construction workers leaning on shovels and holding up traffic ahead"? Because that's what I usually do see when there's road construction.
