Busto Struggling For Robusto

This one is poker content, so if that's not your thing, there's a link post below and a funny video below that. (The title of this post is a reference to this cool online poker documentary.)

The first week of September I ran pretty much break even online. I'd lose a buy-in or two, then I'd win that back and maybe a little more on top, then repeat the win/loss. It continued like that all week. That break-even streak pretty much carried over from the end of August. I don't know if something subtle changed in my game or not, but it was incredibly frustrating. (Most of my losses were from coolers like set over set or full house over full house.)

On Saturday night of this past weekend, my friend Chris had a home game, so I went and had a pretty good time. I expected to break even at best and probably lose a little. I did pretty good for the first hour or two and then I wound up going busto by the end of the night. That was okay, since my main reason for being there really wasn't to make money. (That's what online is for!) I just wanted to hang out with some friends I don't get to see too often and have a good time.

I did some drinking, which I pretty much gave up on awhile back. These days I only do when I hang with this particular group of friends. That definitely had a negative impact on my game. My tolerance for booze is pretty much non-existent and a weak drink or two and I was buzzed. I went from playing overly tight* to pretty much limping stuff I knew I should've folded, just because I was getting bored with folding.

* I did take a little good natured abuse for playing so tight. I guess I was so used to online full ring where playing tight is optimal, and should've been playing closer to a looser more aggro 6-max style. I mean, some of these guys were betting without looking at their hole cards for crying out loud. To me, dumping money into J4 offsuit just seems like bad business.

Anyway, like I said, it was good to hang with the guys, and that's just as important as making money. Next time I'll be more experienced and I definitely plan to play more aggro. It was also cool meeting a friend of a friend who is a live pro. It's nice to know that somebody you sort of know is making a living playing, and if you get better you might be able to do that too.

Sunday morning it was back to grinding it out online, and I actually have been running better. I made a buy-in and a half on Sunday at full-ring cash. I also decided to play a freeroll tourney on a whim. I busted out early on that one. AK failed me again. (AK also let me down hard when it made 2 pair and then got cracked in the live game.)

Monday was about the same. I played strictly cash, full ring in the afternoon, and then I decided to dabble a bit with 6-max. I made more at 6-max than I expected. I may switch over more often, since you can play a little looser and more aggro at 6-max, and doing that at full ring would be like lighting money on fire. (At least it, would at the low-stakes I currently play at.)
