Links For 5-8-2009

Another lengthy list of links. I've really gotta start writing more things besides these link posts.

Amusing

Even if you're not a fan of PEEP SHOW or THAT MITCHELL AND WEBB, which you should be, you'll probably enjoy David Mitchell's column on how hard it is to eat food that's good for you: Save me from Kellogg's Bran Scabs. I myself have been trying to avoid an inevitable heart attack by changing the stuff I eat and (very) gradually starting to exercise. I miss my brother, but I'm in no rush to join him.

Speed camera boss banned for, er, speeding. I love irony.

Useful

Over at The Simple Dollar, they've condensed most of their useful info into one handy PDF file. Everything You Ever Really Needed to Know About Personal Finance On Just One Page. I figured some of you might find that useful. I plan on reading it myself, but first I need to get around to reading another PDF about not putting things off.

More Chicken Chain Hi-jinks.

What's with all the people going apeshit over chicken lately? Can somebody explain this to me? Last week there were two funny videos involving people being angry about not being able to get some Popeye's chicken, and now that douche Oprah has whipped her cult into a frenzy over KFC. Here's three links about the silliness...

Entertainment

Blu-ray player sales surge. Great, now let's drop the price on discs by a few bucks to make them even more affordable. That'll drive sales up a bit. (Plus then I can afford more Blu-Rays.)

Did the WOLVERINE workprint leak cost Fox $29 million? Of course they think so. They operate over the assumption that every download equals a lost sale. (In this case, theater tickets as opposed to DVD, but they'll trot a higher figure out over $29M when the DVD comes out.) Realistically, given how bad the movie is and the reviews it received, coupled with the leak, it did far better than it should have.

SIN CITY 2 moving forward. Given how bad THE SPIRIT was, and how similar it was to SIN CITY, just minus everything that was good about SIN CITY, I think SIN CITY 2 might have a tough battle to win over an audience. Then again, Robert Rodriguez is a far more competent film-maker than Frank Miller, so maybe I'm wrong.

Kiefer Sutherland charged with assault in NY. I don't see how he thought head-butting some guy was going to end up well.

LOL: Hustler to release STAR TREK porn. Somewhere online I once saw another STAR TREK porn parody. I was going to post a link to it and then forgot all about it.

Sure, MY LITTLE PONY trailer is funny now… until they see this parody trailer and really go and make an actual movie. Honestly, this trailer did a great job of mocking the style and feel of Michael Bay flicks.

Donald Faison has the best idea ever. He wants to star in a shwo called, THE CHRONICLES OF LANDO CALRISSIAN. I'd totally watch that. One of my favorite SCRUBS moments was when Turk got to meet Billy Dee Williams and kept calling him Lando.

Obama drama. Sounds like the other networks are quietly talking about following Fox's lead and skipping the next prime time interrupting press conference from the President.

Video Games

DUKE NUKEM developer shuts down. So, yeah, I guess that DUKE NUKEM FOREVER will be delayed a bit more now. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

Activision finally confirms GUITAR HERO: VAN HALEN. I'm sure GUITAR HERO fans will be looking forward to that one.

Columnist equates violent games with acceptance of torture. Well, also "violent" movies and TV shows too. I guess some people have trouble seperating fact from fiction. These people also have a poor grasp of history, since it's no secret than man has been a violent creature the entire time we've been around.

The Usual Soapbox Stuff

Label profit falls with new iTunes prices. Is there anybody who didn't see this coming? Raise the prices and sales go down, especially during a recession. How is it these idiots have made millions of dollars and I'm searching the couch for lost change and hoping you guys buy stuff through Amazon via my affiliate links or click a Google ad every now and again? If I can grasp the obvious, why can't they?

IFPI using disputed Pirate Bay verdict to claim web hosting companies are liable. This is like blaming the car companies for people who drive recklessly.

ACTA transparency: can shame work where lawsuits fail? Considering that ACTA isn't in the interest of the public, but instead designed to favor big corporations, my guess is that no, shaming won't work.

Web designer opposes France's "3 strikes" law, loses job. Expect to see more of this. People who vocally oppose the corporations and support file-sharing will be made "examples" out of to scare everybody else into staying in line.
