Links For 6-19-2008

I think I mentioned this pre-move, but now it's confirmed: James Bond classics coming to Blu-ray this October. Hopefully player and disc prices will drop by Christmas!

IP traffic to 'double' every two years. More and more things require the internet and broadband access. I'm surprised that the figure is only double and not triple or more.

France to ban illegal downloaders from using the internet under three-strikes rule. Has anybody ever considered that if large percentages of the population, that are otherwise law-abiding citizens, are engaging in an activity that's "illegal" that it might just be time to change the laws? All this sort of law does is make downloaders more underground, and people that get their net access cut off can (and most likely will) find an alternative means of getting online. (I can think of at least four alternatives right off the top of my head.)

KISS on new album: 'We're waiting until file-sharers calm down'. Hey, I like KISS. But these fuckers are one of the few bands where their discography has nearly as many (if not more) greatest hits compilations and live albums than studio albums. They make a fortune playing live and on merchandising, so you'd think they wouldn't really care that much if they're not making as much as they used to selling albums. Honestly, if they're waiting for people to stop sharing music, they're never going to record anything new.

AP exaggerates the 'conversation' it's having with bloggers; caught copying text from bloggers as well. I guess it's okay for them to use material from the internet, yet when people on the internet apply fair use to them, they don't like it.

Pulling the plug on American usenet. Newsgroups are the original forums of the internet. They predate things like the web.

That video you're watching just might break the internet. Apparently some telecommunications professionals believe that the internet will "break" in a few years because of people using it. Well, why don't all of these companies actually use all of the tax money they were given in addition to the money we all pay monthly and actually use it to upgrade their equipment and other elements of their infrastructure? Isn't that what the government gave them the money for to begin with? (I'm primarily talking about the US here.) Supposedly most of it wound up being used to upgrade networks for mobile phones.

Movie theaters join fight against MPAA's anti-DVR initiative. I love it when industries turn in on themselves and start fighting.

Rumor: The reasons behind Ironside's SPLINTER CELL split. I'm still really hoping this is a false rumor. After all, there hasn't been any confirmation yet that it's true.

Warren Spector: No more 100-hour games, k?. Warren Spector might have created some great games, but he's out of his mind on this one. I'm sick of games that cost more and more and take less and less time to play through. I want more for my money, not less!
