Super-Sized Links For 8-1-2009

Useful

How to download free Hulu movies to your computer. I expect this to get killed off quickly. In the meantime, as I write this, I'm using this program to download the CHUCK panel from Comic-Con, which I haven't had a chance to watch yet. (FYI, I've got a reasonably fast connection and this download is taking forever.)

Tech

Windows 7 activation already cracked with OEM volume license key. Basically, it is/was a BIOS hack that makes Win7 think that your MB is an OEM computer's. Of course, with this out in the open, it didn't take long for the leaked key to get black-listed: Microsoft kills leaked Lenovo activation crack. Of course, all this means is a wait until October, when 7 is released to the public, and once multiple OEM keys are out there, those keys will be much harder to blacklist, because it would impact legit OEM customers. The crackers and downloaders will always be one step ahead. It's easy to see why people, who don't get an OEM copy pre-installed copy of Windows on a new PC pirate it. 7 Ultimate will retail for about $300. That's insane. If it were $50-60 people wouldn't think twice about snapping up a legit copy. That's only the cost of a single Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 game, and those sell really well.

Big Content: ludicrous to expect DRMed music to work forever. These guys must hate all of the things they used to sell us like old records, cassettes, and CDs. People can keep listening to them over and over again after only paying for them once.

Congressman calls for P2P ban after sensitive data leaks. This ban being in government offices, which it'd be hard to complain about. Government employees should be working for our tax dollars, not downloading this week's episode of LOST or whatever while at work.

Jury dings file sharer $675,000, RIAA prevails. Well it's not the million plus the other person got. The irony in this being that if this poor sap won't be able to afford to buy music, or much of anything else now.

So much for the talk that the Pirate Bay sale wasn't going through: Pirate Bay buyer says deal nearly done. Of course, in the meantime, the Pirate Bay must block traffic to the Netherlands. Yeah, I'm sure they'll get right on that. They're just so cooperative with court orders. HAHAHAHAHA!

Whacky Criminal Hijinks

Armed robber steals $3 from a 29-year-old Holyoke woman, stabs her with syringe and tells her he has AIDS. That's from a few towns over. I really really really want to get out of Western Massachusetts.

Arcade cabinet used to smuggle pot, DEA nabs 'High Score'. The headline is what does it for me on this one.

Entertainment

It's official: Ridley Scott will direct ALIEN prequel! I sure hope it's better than the last two sequels and stupid AVP movies.

USA orders renewal for BURN NOTICE. So another season of, "when you're a spy..."

Comic Con 09: Larry Hama talks GI JOE. It's interesting that the guy who essentially created all of those characters seems pretty okay with the bastardization of his work.

ROUNDERS 2 a reality? I wonder what they could really do for a sequel.

GREMLINS 3: CGI remake? A remake, even though I generally hate them, would make more sense than another sequel. I remember really liking the original as a kid, and when the sequel came out when I was in high school, I thought it sucked. (Well, when I eventually saw it when it hit cable and was on every day for like a year.)

William Shatner does more Palin poetry on Tonight Show. If you liked the last one, here's more of the same.

New FANTASTIC FOUR logo is a throwback to a classic I've always liked that logo best. Probably because that's the logo that was on the earliest FF comics I ever had.

Video Games

Preview: LEFT 4 DEAD 2. I've been replaying the first one a bit lately. Losing money at poker is slightly cushioned by shooting the walking (and in L4D, running) dead.

Come see what being abducted in FALLOUT 3 looks like. The final DLC from FALLOUT 3 involves that alien ship you might've stumbled across in the game. I haven't played any of the DLC yet. In fact, I never even finished the main game. It's a cool game, but I've spent more time listening to the soundtrack (ripped the mp3s from the game) than actually playing the game.

A sure-fire way to add a little cuteness to SAN ANDREAS. I got a nice laugh out of this. People will too much time on their hands make the most amusing crap.

Valve: Fight used sales by making good, supported games. The best way to combat used game sales is making a game so good that people want to play it again and again, and don't want to sell it off. Again, Valve are awesome, and make games like that.

PlayStation 3 production costs slashed 70 percent. I wonder if this means there will be a price cut. Probably not, given Sony's attitude.
