Links For 8-21-2009

Took yesterday off since it was my late brother's birthday. So I just didn't feel like doing much on the net. Anyway, this link farm is a bit bloated because of that.

Windows 7

Report – Windows 7 is ‘practically made for pirates’. Yeah, because being able to easily stream content stored on your computer to other devices in your home is "OMG YARRR!!!"

7 good reasons to switch to Windows 7. Honestly, I've been with XP since before it's commercial release, since I got my copy at the ISP I worked at many many years ago. I skipped Vista, but I'm looking forward to upgrading to 7.

7 reasons to avoid Windows 7. For me the only valid one is the upgrading from XP means having to start from scratch. I'll have to transfer all of my content to a 500 gig external hard drive before I can format and install Win 7. (The price thing is a factor too. But really, the big stopping block for me is needing another HD and probably an enclosure. I'm pretty broke right now.)

Tech

Make Post-Mortem Plans for Your Online Life. I think about this all the time. I guess most people wouldn't bother looking at your emails or whatever. I mean, I never tried to log into my brother's email account after he died. (Why would I? I never looked at it when he was alive.) As far as my own mail goes, all people will find in mine are order confirmations from Amazon and Newegg, notifications from Twitter and Facebook, and spam. Probably the same stuff you'd find in most people's inboxes.

Entertainment

OUTLAND gets a remake — and an entirely new plot. Considering that most people never heard of the original, I doubt there will be much nerd rage over this one. I'd rather suffer an OUTLAND remake than crap like this: A 'DIRTY DANCING' remake? C'mon!

TNT's giving us more LEVERAGE. Maybe it's just me, but this season isn't grabbing me like the first season.

Jon Hamm joins Zack Snyder’s SUCKER PUNCH. A little something for the ladies, since the cast is mostly women.

CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM preview: Larry David vs. Plastic. Who hasn't had this experience?

THE VENTURE BROS. season four promo. I've been a fan of this show since day one.

Video games

GC 09: New CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2 screens are cold. Looks like a lot of winter action this time around.

MODERN WARFARE 2 bringing $60 price tag to PC games. I'm still on the fence about PC or 360 for MW2. I have the first one on the PC, and the graphics seemed more hi-res than the console version. I've still got time to decide. Still, I guess this means that price isn't as much of a factor now.

MGS: PEACE WALKER screens are hiding under a cardboard tank. Pictures not enough? Have a trailer... Snake's not alone in this 9-minute METAL GEAR PEACE WALKER trailer.

GC 09: FF XIII due out in North America in Spring 2010. So it sounds like the early part of the year will be expensive and busy gaming wise for me. Guess I better start earning more at poker fast.

FINAL FANTASY XIII for Xbox 360 70 percent complete Oh, and Xbox 360's FINAL FANTASY XIII likely to be on three DVDs.

Koller Says PS2 Backwards Compatibility "Not Coming Back" John Koller flatly stated, "[Backwards compatibility is] not coming back, so let me put that on the table. But it's all people ever talk about!" So what does that say about PS2 games versus PS3 games? Since all but a handful of PS3 games are available for the Xbox 360, it sounds like people have very little use for PS3 games and only want to usa a PS3 as a Blu-ray player and to play their PS2 library. Kinda sad. I'm glad my PS3 is one of the older backwards compatible ones. (On the rare occasions that I do want to play a PS2 title, I'll just use my PS2 since the PS3's upscaling looks crappy compared to the 360's and I've got the HDLoader for the PS2, so I don't have to deal with long load times or digging out the game disc.)

Forbes: PS3 Slim is too little, too late. Between the high price of the PS3 and the whole format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD, Sony kind of shot themselves in the foot this generation.

SILENT HILL: SHATTERED MEMORIES box art is awesomely creepy. Speaking of PS2 games that I'd want to play, this is one of them. (It still is getting a PS2 port, right?)

HEAVY RAIN's David Cage wants to set the record straight on QTEs. Some of the QTE events in FAHRENHEIT/INDIGO PROPHECY were a bit annoying.

Lots and lots of ALAN WAKE gameplay footage. Haven't had a chance to watch this yet, but I did bookmark it.
