Ironic local news headline: Trial of man accused of failing to report for jury duty postponed, due to lack of jurors. It's not too often the local news actually makes me smile.
Between the sales tax on Amazon.com items and that whole trying to strongarm ISPs into getting rid of usenet in the guise of cracking down on kiddie porn no matter how ineffectual that may be, New York has really seemed like a less appealing place to live. Now there's this: New York governor signs video game bill into law. The funny thing is, like the ISP "code of conduct" silliness, this law consists of things that the video game industry already does. It's just a bunch of noise to make people think these politicians are actually doing something. Expect to see this one tossed out by the supreme court if the game industry tries to press the issue. (The same thing that's happened with every other anti-game law out there.) Then again, since this is all stuff that the game biz already does, most aren't expecting them to bother fighting it. I won't be surprised if NY goes after movies and TV next. Well, until they realize how much of that stuff is filmed there and generates revenue for the city/state and quietly backs off.
Spamwar's worst mistakes being recapitulated by the copyright wars. Lost causes are hilarious from the sidelines.
USA Today hype crashes Twitter. A strong gust of wind seems to be enough to crash Twitter.
Net Censorship Law Struck Down Again. "A federal appeals court struck down as unconstitutional a Clinton-era law that would have forced websites with adult material to verify visitors' ages, dealing another blow to the government in a 10-year court battle over net censorship." Whew! I don't have the time or effort to worry about whether all of you are old enough to read the word "fuck" on this page.
Piracy has 'tragic' impact on US society, says BSA. People (and businesses) downloading software is hardly tragic. Cancer patients are tragic. Floods wiping out towns is tragic. People like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian being famous is tragic. People not paying for software is inconvenient for those businesses. (Honestly, they should just switch to open source stuff.)
Details of DNS flaw leaked; exploit expected by end of today. This could be bad bad bad.
Estelle Getty dead at 84. There go my dreams of STOP! OR MY MOM WILL SHOOT 2 ever coming out.
Take a peek at the Bond flick Blu-Ray cover art. If you're so inclined, that is.
DOLLHOUSE, the new Joss Whedon show, is getting a new pilot. This is one of the few new shows this fall that I'm bothering to give a chance. It's genre fiction on Fox though, so I'm not getting my hopes up.
5 Reasons No One Cares About The New X-Files Movie. Hey, I was ahead of the curve on this one by never giving a shit about the X-FILES at all! Seriously, even though I'm a sci-fi nerd, I never understood the love that show got. I was bored out of my mind any time that I attempted to watch it.
