Links For 6-12-2008

This isn't a link, but Firefox 3 RC3 came out for those of you using Macs. There was a bug that only effected Macs. Windows and Linux users are fine with RC2.

Need a good laugh? The first paragraph of this news story from the year 2000 should set you rolling with laughter. (Hindsight and irony ahoy!) Be careful you don't laugh too much though or you could wind up like the guy in my next link...

The man who fell off a sofa while laughing at HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU - and ended up in court. There's a joke in this one somewhere, I'm just too tired to find it.

Jessica Hynes wants to make SPACED movie. In related news, I want to see that movie.

Finger Severing Just Another Day at the Bond Office for Daniel Craig. Between this and all of the other incidents, I'd say that QUANTUM OF SOLACE is cursed, and I don't even believe in curses normally. I'm afraid to buy the DVD when it comes out. It'll probably make my DVD players explode or something.

UK to get HEROES season 3 early. This time the viewers in the UK can be disappointed simultaneously with viewers in the US! Well, that is if season 3 turns out as bad as season 2.

Konami cancels Japan MGS4 launch events after Akihabara tragedy. One whacko stabs some nerds and ruins it for everybody. Don't get me wrong, what happened there is terrible. Seriously, given some of the things I've heard about repressed otaku, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. Of course, there's already political rumblings like: Akihabara killing to cause Japanese internet regulation?

Vote for Nobody [PIC] (via Digg). Sadly, this is probably very very true.

Katherine Heigl Chases Oscar Gold While Stepping On Those That Made Her Ascent Possible. I used to think that Katherine Heigl was hot, but everything I read makes her sound like a really unpleasant person (read: bitch). So that's sort of turned me off to her.

Boy, 13, 'hanged himself after he was bullied on Bebo for being a fan of Emo music'. That's really taking the emo thing a bit far, wouldn't you say? I say, Darwinism wins again.

Despite the best efforts of the record labels, selling promos CDs is still legal.

ISPs Shut Down Usenet to Save Children — and Cash. Some ISPs are going to start blocking certain newsgroups (or stop offering usenet service altogether), and blocking certain sites in an effort to stomp out child porn on the internet. Now, I agree that pedos are horrible monsters and should be locked up, eliminated, whatever. The problem is, once they start blocking certain content, the RIAA, MPAA, and whatever other groups will start lobbying for ISPs to block things. Then people who are offended by certain things (even if they're legal) will lobby to get those things banned. (Just look at those whackos writing letters to get "offensive" TV shows off the air.) It's a slippery slope that won't have any payoff for it's original intent. For instance: How Cuomo's anti-child porn efforts will make the child porn problem worse. (The gist is that by cracking down on certain things, the people involved in that sick shit will still be able to do it, just more covertly. Which means that it'll be harder to track them down and introduce them to the wonderful people that populate prisons.) Plus, dropping usenet, which has plenty of legitimate uses, won't work. Most people who use usenet don't use their ISPs news servers and pay for outside premium servers. So censoring the internet, even with the best intent, is a bad idea and won't even work.

Porn Found On L.A. Obscenity Case Judge's Website. Isn't it funny how the people in power who are so vehemently against things, are usually the ones found with the very things they're usually crusading against? Hypocrites.
